| stewart mccoy | i've been noticing lots of people moving to trimmed bikes, less parts and all, like fixed gear bikes. what's the advantage of owning a single speed bike versus, say, an 8-speed? |
| steve block | the two real advantages are simplicity and aesthetics. simplicity is just less things to break, aesthetics for me at least is that derailers aren't terribly attractive. that said, i think a lot of it is just a trend, because it's the cool thing right now. i have a redline 925 set to fixed gear and a 12 speed trek 610 road bike from 1984. they are both awesome. right now i ride the trek more because i'm redoing the brake setup on the redline and being slow about it. |

| andy buck | I'm in it for the mechanical simplicity. I want to be able to work on my bike, but I don't want to work on derailleurs. Also, being a fair weather minimalist - extra parts make me cringe. |
